Ubuntu – Download Management

When FlashGet and FlashGot just will not play nice together on your Ubuntu desktop, I’ve found an alternative way of managing your file hosted download needs

There is a great list of download managers for Ubuntu over at Ubuntu-Geek:

And for Windows XP, my preferred download manager was always FlashGet, for it’s feature to save server login details and the Firefox add-on FlashGot, for it’s features to Copy links from hyperlinks and text.

Unfortunately, I’ve always had bugs or other issues when running these 2 applications on Ubuntu. It will work for a while, but usually after a reboot, flashgot can never use flasget again. How do I over come this problem?

“Tucan Manager is a free and open source software designed for automatic management of downloads and uploads at hosting sites like rapidshare or megaupload.”

What I like about Tucan is it’s ability to check the links are live before you attempt to download, which honestly saves you a considerable amount of time. I appreciate there are FF addons to do this amongst other online services, but it’s nice to have this feature built into your download manager.

I doubt that FlashGot would work with Tucan (I honestly haven’t tried) so instead, I opted for an alternative link copier, that can handle both hyperlink (to copy the full url behind the shortened hyperlink) and text links (non clickable).

I did find one called Link Copier @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7852, but it must have been removed. :(

Copy Links will make the links available on your clip board for easy copy/paste functionality.

Have fun, and as always drop your own suggestions in the comments.
